A pair of sleeves knitted as one, then a border attached to make the body of a cardigan. The example was plated, knitted on a standard gauge machine at T7.

Basic Patterns in 4 ply yarn

This section has collections of basic patterns in multiple sizes, from baby to adult. Use them as they are, or as a basis for a new design. All patterns were made using Knitware software, with a very little editing. On the first page of the pdf download is an index: Click on the size you want and you will be taken to the correct page, which can then be printed, if desired. Each pattern is one page long.

The version above was knitted in Yeoman’s Panama, 4 ply, at T7 on a standard gauge machine. 30 stitches and 42 rows per 10cm/4 inches.  The pattern should have this information, but the wrong file keeps appearing - the wonders of technology!!!

  • Charlotte - a longline jacket

    Charlotte:

a long jacket with a lovely ribbed collar/shawl edge. Large size took about 700g of King Cole Superwash wool

  • Cropped Cardi

This is a 4 ply waist length cardigan.  You can knit it as I have done, with no front, like a shrug, or with a V-necked front.  Most 4 ply yarns are suitable, you may have to adjust the KM tension - I knitted it in Shamal and used T6 [the pattern says T7, which I would use with Superwash wool]

  • Flare

    Flare

    size 34-44

This is a tunic with side seam inserts to create a flared hem.  Knitted in Yeoman Panama, but other 4 ply yarns would also do well.

  • Grigna Shrug

    Grigna Shug

This is an elegant cover up for a sleeveless dress. Knit at T10 in Yeoman Grigna, takes very little yarn. Click on picture for pattern.

  • Hybrid

    Hybrid

This is a standard gauge 4 ply pattern for a cardigan, which begins as a pair of sleeves knitted as one piece. Then a circular piece, a 'skirt' is knitted on. The first picture is with a handknitted skirt, the second a machine knit one. Other suggestions are included.

  • JO

A simple pattern using Yeoman's Fifty Fifty yarn. Large range of sizes. [chest size 30 - 56 inches]

  • May

    May

a raglan cap sleeved top with waist shaping and a gently curved hem

Knitted in Yeoman Panama [but could be any suitable 4 ply yarn] it took about 300g for the second size

  • Mock Cable edge shrug

Lambswool shrug with narrow cable edging

This is knitted in 2 ply lambswool [I think it would work well in any 2ply] and includes advice on how to make the front edge more rounded, if desired.  Sizes 12 - 26.

  • Mohair swirl

    Mohair Swirl

This is a variation of the Grigna Swirl, but with a more waisted shape, and long sleeves.  I have knitted it in Yeoman Elsa mohair, which is 3 ply, at Tension 10 on the standard gauge, which comes out as a fine but stable and warm cardi.  Takes very little yarn and flatters the figure.  Click on picture for pattern.

  • Rapture

    Rapture

Is it a wrap or a poncho? It is neither, but a cleverly designed garment by Pat!

  • Shrug

4 ply shrug pattern, multiple sizes

By special request, after wearing it to the July 2011 meeting,  I have produced this pattern.

  • Swirl in Grigna

    Swirl in Grigna

This pattern is adapted from a hand knitted one.  I knitted it in Grigna, but also in Hobby, although I did not like it as much - it was a bit finer/looser, and did not drape as well.

  • swoop

    Swoop

    size 34-44

This is a cardigan knitted with a long shawl collar, which combines with a wide bottom border to produce a swooping shape.  I knitted it in Yeoman Panama, but other 4 ply yarns would do just as well.
