Premature baby cardigan
GAUGE DATA:
Gauge (Stocking stitch over 4 in = 10 cm): 28.0 sts by 36.0 rows.
Body using 3 mm needles
Ribbing using 2.5 mm needles
BACK:
1. Cast on 45 sts on size 2.5 needles. Work in K1P1 ribbing for 10 rows. Inc 5 sts evenly across last row to 50 sts total.
2. Change to size 3 needles and Stocking stitch. Work even until piece measures 3 ins (26 rows), excluding hem.
3. Mark this row at both ends for armhole.
4. Work in stocking stitch until work measures 7 ins.
5. Back neck. Cast off 13 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Place remaining 24 sts on holder.
FRONTS [knit 2 reversing shapings]:
1. Cast on 21 sts on 2.5 needles. Work 10 rows rib. Inc 2 sts evenly across last row to 24 sts total.
2. Change to size 3 needles and Stocking stitch. Work even until piece measures 3 ins (26 rows), excluding hem.
3. Armhole. Mark this row at armhole edge. Continue until work measures 7 ins.
4. Decrease 1 stitch at front edge on next row. Work 3 rows st st. Repeat the last 4 rows until 13 sts remain
5. Work until work measures 7 ins. Cast off 13 shoulder sts loosely.
SLEEVES:
1. Cast on 30 sts on size 2.5 needles. Work in K1P1 ribbing for 10 rows.
2. Change to size 3 needles and Stocking stitch.
3. Inc 1 st at each end of 5th row then every 4th row to 46sts [32 rows]
4. Work even for 8 rows..
5. Cast off loosely.
Making Up:
1. Sew shoulder seams.
2. Sew sleeves to body matching armhole markings.
3. Join side and sleeve seam.
4. Mark position of 3 buttons on front.
BANDS:
size 2.5 needles.
Cast on 7 sts. Work in K1P1 rib until band is long enought to fit all round cardi, making 3 buttonholes to fit button markings.
Attach band and buttons.
